You Don’t Have to Build Like They Did

Hey Reader,

Innovation isn’t just about tech or strategy—it’s about people. Especially when those people have carried trauma, shouldered burdens, and still dared to build.

We’re shifting how we create.

Too often, design and innovation happen in boardrooms disconnected from the realities of the people they serve. But Black women know better—because we’ve lived it.

If we want to build systems, products, and services that truly heal instead of harm, we must start from a different place:

  • Lived experience is expertise. Your story, your healing, your insight—it’s data. Use it.
  • Community care is strategy. What sustains you will sustain others. Build from that.
  • Slowing down is innovation. We don’t need to keep pace with hustle culture. We need to design rest, reflection, and humanity into our work.

This is how we break the cycle of harm and reimagine leadership, not as control, but as collective healing in action.

You don’t have to replicate the systems that harmed you. You have the power—and the vision—to build something softer, wiser, and more whole.

With power and vision,
'Tine

P.S. On this week’s episode of the Getting Black Women Paid podcast, I sat down with Tess Padmore to talk about trauma-informed innovation—and why empathy, care, and lived experience should be the foundation of everything we build.

That can’t be the whole story. For so many Black women, we wear the word “resilience” like armor. We keep pushing forward, even when the path is heavy with silence, shame, or systems that were never built to support us. But there’s a truth we don’t talk about enough: healing doesn’t come through hiding. It...
